It should come as no surprise to TOH readers that, according to the Liberty Mutual New Beginnings Report, seven of 10 Americans planning a redo project intend to do some of the work themselves. Unfortunately, the study also indicates that many of these DIYers feel overwhelmed by the idea of beginning a large project, such as an entire house.
Here, expert craftsman Chip Wade, a consultant with Liberty Mutual Insurance, offers tips for tackling a whole-house fixer-upper.
1. Start With the Entrance
An upgraded front door will help make a good first impression. A smart budget fix for a worn door is coating it with a bold paint color. Also new front-door hardware will give it a more polished look.
2. Add Curb Appeal to the Garage
If your garage faces the street, it could be what visitors’ notice first. Refresh the look of your garage door with the right door type, material, and look for your home and budget. Create a warmer, more welcoming look with a garage pergola or exterior sconce lights.
3. Plan Ahead
If you don’t plan to redo the entire house, creating a master renovation plan can help increase its value. Sharing the blueprints with potential buyers in the future will make it easier for them to envision property’s potential.
